Project Case Study - O. Henry Hotel & Green Valley
Grill
Hotel and Restaurant Design Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels has developed a new hotel concept and a new hotel - that simultaneously look to the past, the present and to the future. Harkening back to the era of the locally-owned, passionately-run, community centered hotels of the early 20th century, the O. Henry Hotel is distinctively "in and of" Greensboro. It demonstrates its pride of place in many ways. The O. Henry Hotel takes its name from Greensboro native William Sidney Porter, who wrote under the pen name of O. Henry. Many design features, such as the rustication and arched windows of the first floor and the old-fashioned double hung windows of the guest rooms, are reminiscent of an old Greensboro hotel, also named the O. Henry, that was built in 1919 and demolished in the 1970s. Glimpses of other Greensboro landmarks can be seen in the design of the O. Henry Hotel. Indeed, its very structure - red Carolina brick and honeyed Carolina pine - attests to its place and emphasizes the hotel's pride in Greensboro and its history. Equally important to Quaintance-Weaver's
new hotel concept is the use of modern innovative elements to ensure the
safety, comfort and convenience of guests during every aspect of their
stay or visit. Correlating with this premise, the O. Henry Hotel features
oversized guest rooms (over 450 square feet) with impressive electronic
data connections; individual direct dial telephones; two-line speaker
phones; two vanities; a separate dressing room; shower separate from an
oversized soaking tub; full-sized desks with ergonomic work chairs; and
refrigerators, microwaves, and coffeemakers. The hotel offers over 5,400 square feet of meeting and banquet space. Other facilities include a private dining room with a wine cellar atmosphere called the Merchants and Manufacturers room (named for the Merchants and Manufacturers Club in the original O. Henry Hotel), an outdoor courtyard for dining, a breakfast pavilion, and a cloister garden. The Quaintance-Weaver hotel concept also focuses on the future. A hotel that is classically designed, carefully constructed, meticulously maintained and operated to serve the needs of guests and community today and as they evolve in the future is a hotel built to last. By design, the O. Henry Hotel is meant to last a century or more. Located adjacent to the O. Henry Hotel is the Green Valley Grill, which was developed from the same Quaintance-Weaver concept of honoring the past, using the best from the present and looking toward the future. The goal of its design was to create an "old Tuscan revival two-story building" and to complement it with contemporary additions and the technological innovations of a modern open kitchen, huge wood-burning oven, rotisserie and grill. Specific Hotel Carpeting Requirements As in all hotels of this caliber,
the O. Henry required a distinctive, high-performance, ModaVation by Lees helped to recreate carpeting with a design and palette inspired by an English Arts and Crafts tapestry. A foliate shape was four times rotated ninety degrees to create a medallion that is arranged in a staggered drop repeat. The advanced technology of ModaVation's multi-strand tufting beautifully recreated the rich abrash of fine handmade carpets. Moreover, ModaVation's custom design capabilities allowed the same stylized floral pattern used for the hotel's public spaces to be reinterpreted on a smaller scale for the guest rooms. In addition, a coordinating attached border was created for corridors near guest rooms. The company's ability to select one color or strand of yarn and manipulate it enabled the yarn to be blended, creating the shading desired by the design team. Specific Restaurant Carpeting Requirements Carpeting for the Green Valley Grill required the same high standards as the hotel carpet. The carpet design process for the restaurant required a product that would work in both classical and contemporary spaces. The volute spirals found in the background of Italian mosaics served as the inspiration. Once again, the multi-strand technology of ModaVation by Lees enabled Quaintance-Weaver to create a pattern that subtly shaded the "tesserae" in colors taken from the Belgian tapestry on the booths and chair seats, as well as the oversized tumbled brick of the walls.

The O. Henry Hotel and the Green Valley Grill required carpeting with a historic feel and a distinct look reflective of a specific era. Durability, longevity, performance and design attributes for carpeting in high-traffic areas were other key factors considered by the O. Henry designers. The capabilities of Lees, one of the leading manufacturers of carpeting in the country, were harmonious with the needs of the project's designers. Lees offers custom colors and custom design, and the company's advanced technology allows exceptional products to be produced in unlimited patterns and colors, pairing design freedom with high performance. Lees carpets are known to be extremely durable, which makes them cost effective in the carpet's life cycle. The Lees design team and the hotel's designers formed a classic collaboration to develop custom carpets that complement fabrics used throughout the hotel's interior as well as furnishings in the restaurant. |
