Located in the northwest quadrant of San Antonio, Northside Independent School District is the state’s sixth largest school district. Carpet for the city’s Passmore Elementary School needed to be installed throughout the entire school, including classrooms, corridors, the library, and administrative areas.

The District’s requirements for the school’s carpet were that it would not ravel or delaminate once installed, be easy to maintain, hide soiling and stains, withstand the daily rigors and punishment of elementary school-age students, and retain its original appearance for a minimum of 10 years.

“The district installed the carpet in the school approximately 30 years ago, and today it looks as new as it did when it was first installed,” explained Vince Flores, maintenance supervisor for the Northside Independent School District. “Lees helped us to find a carpet that would fulfill our needs, and decades later, it looks like it was just installed. We couldn’t have asked for anything more from the company.”

The Lees carpet pattern chosen for the school – Faculty II – was up to the challenge. Selected primarily to enhance the design and other interior features of the school, its minimalist, heathered multi-level loop pattern achieved the school’s design requirements: a product that is not overpowering, but will perform optimally for years to come.

Faculty II exceeded all of the school district’s requirements. With the carpet’s DuPont Antron® fiber, it is easy to keep clean, disguise any stains, and helps reduce traffic patterns. With Faculty II’s Unibond™ backing – introduced more than 30 years ago, and to date the best selling high-performance backing system in the industry – the major performance problems associated with carpet in high traffic applications such as schools – edge ravel, delamination and tuft bind loss – were eliminated. Unibond’s unique thermoplastic construction prevents water from sources such as cleaning or accidental spills from negatively affecting the backing’s performance. Unibond carries a lifetime warranty covering these performance failures in both wet or dry conditions. Additionally, Unibond is totally synthetic and does not act as a food source or promote the growth of mold.

Introduced as the floorcovering industry’s first high-performance thermoplastic backing, Unibond has continued to offer industry-leading performance as it has evolved into an environmentally sustainable product. This revolutionary backing system is specified more often than all others, and since 1971, more than 300 million yards of carpet featuring Unibond have been installed. Additionally, Unibond has earned the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label approval, received a Businesses for the Bay award for pollution prevention, and portions have been converted to a renewable resource.

“Situations like the installation of Faculty II in Passmore Elementary School offer proof that Lees provides facility managers with the most durable and sustainable carpet options on the market,” said Greg Wittlinger, executive vice president and general manager of broadloom for Lees. “We are dedicated to continuing to develop product that not only lasts for decades, but also looks as good as the day it was installed. This not only benefits facilities, but also the environment.”
