FACILITY BACKGROUND
The newly-constructed Yampa Valley Medical Center, located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, specializes in long-term and acute care. This medical facility was originally established in 1950 as Routt Memorial Hospital in Steamboat Springs. Its new identity as Yampa Valley Medical Center brought with it a new design and location. Architectural firm Davis Partnership developed the overall design of the facility, and looked to Lees to carpet several areas in the medical center.

THE CHALLENGE
"We needed carpeting that would stand up to the scrupulous challenges of a heavily-trafficked facility in a snowy mountain area, especially in the main lobby and corridors," said Jack Ladish, director of plant operations, Yampa Valley Medical Center. "It was imperative that the carpet be durable, stain-resistant, and easy to maintain, with impervious backing to best serve the newly-designed medical center," said Ladish.

Amongst the specific floor requirements that Ladish required was a backing system that allowed the carpet tile used to be easily removed from the floor surface at the main entrance of the facility. This enables deep cleaning, repair or replacement if necessary due to the abuses of a heavy volume of traffic.

"We wanted to communicate an arts and crafts theme throughout the facility to correspond with and complement the 'mountain lodge' architectural design of the facility," said John Lowe, project architect of Davis Partnership. "Therefore, we needed a combination of carpeting that was easy to coordinate throughout the facility, and was aesthetically pleasing from the main lobby and throughout the corridors of the medical center," said Lowe.

REASON FOR CHOOSING LEES
In response to the needs of Yampa Valley Medical Center, the design firm gathered carpet samples from various manufacturers and put each to the test.

"When we started this project Mr. Ladish was interested in finding a carpet with superb performance characteristics and appearance retention," said Sara Parsons, interior designer for Davis Partnership. "Mr. Ladish ran the various carpet samples through rigorous tests by staining, soiling, then cleaning each sample to find the best possible product for the medical center. Mr. Ladish specified Lees Carpets for this project because it held up best to the challenges amongst the competitors."

"Lees provided an array of color coordinated carpeting that supported the facility's design theme and provided high-performance attributes specified to meet the needs of the facility," said Alex Jauregui, Lees executive vice president of modular carpet. "The combination of Lees' latest advancements in carpet backing technologies and the wide array of design and color options available from various product collections provided the facility manager and designers with a plethora of specifying options."

LEES PRODUCTS USED
For the main lobby and corridors the designers selected Bottega and Basare from Lees' Modello Collection, textured loop broadloom patterns in a brown and rust colorway. Lees utilizes its Full Repeat Scroll (FRS) process in the manufacturing of Bottega and Basare. FRS can create carpet with pattern repeats of up to 12 feet wide, and allows pattern changes with very low yardage minimums.

To provide directional cues to visitors throughout Yampa Valley Medical Center, designers specified Lees Wayfinder II, a solid textured product designed for borders and insets, in a green colorway.

For offices, breakrooms, locker rooms and nurse stations, the team selected Faculty IV, a multicolor cut and loop broadloom product, in brown and green colorways.

In the center of the lobby trailing to the facility's main entrance, designers created an aesthetic reminiscent of a stained glass effect using Lees' Essence solid color carpet tiles (recently refined as Color Bridge) in a wide variety of colorways ranging from purple to green to gold. Essence's tight, dense construction ensured a high-performance product with superior durability for the busy entryway.

Specific carpet performance attributes include:

· Lees' Unibond™ broadloom backing system, which provides a bond that is three times stronger than any conventional latex-backed carpets.

· Lees' Integrated Cushion Thermobond (ICT) modular backing that utilizes an exclusive thermoplastic coating with a reinforced fiberglass that will not shrink, stretch, cup or dish or dome.

· Lees' Duracolor®, a patented stain-resistant dye technology, that is integrated into carpet fiber -- rather than applied topically -- to provide permanent stain, soil and fade resistance while affording total color and style flexibility. Duracolor is integral to the carpet fiber and will not wash or wear off after repeated cleanings or heavy traffic.

Both backing systems carry a lifetime warranty, and provide a moisture barrier that is mold and mildew resistant -an essential feature for healthcare environments.

CONCLUSION
Yampa Valley Medical Center required high-performance, high-style carpeting unique to each area in the facility that would carry an overall aesthetic theme throughout the building. The capabilities of Lees, one of the leading manufacturers of carpeting in the country, corresponded with the needs of the project manager and the design team, resulting in a unique and enduring carpet installation.
